Veneers Improve the Appearance of Teeth

Working out of her own practice in Laguna Hills, California, Monica Boniadi, DDS, offers a wide range of dental procedures. To improve the appearance of teeth, Dr. Monica Boniadi provides many options at her office, including veneers.

Dental veneers consist of thin layers of either resin composite or porcelain. Dentists place them on the front surfaces of discolored teeth. Porcelain veneers are thicker than resin veneers and more resistant to stains. However, resins require less removal of enamel. Veneers enhance several dental conditions, in addition to discoloration. The process can restore chipped, broken, or worn-down teeth. It can also improve the look of uneven, improperly aligned, or gapped teeth.

Veneering generally takes three office visits to complete. The dentist will take off just half a millimeter of enamel, almost the same as the thickness of the veneer, and make a mold to send to the dental lab. After trimming the veneer for a precise fit, the dentist will prepare the tooth by etching and polishing. The veneer is then cemented on.
